Want a fun alternative to the beaches in Ecuador? Head to the town of Baños (de Santa Agua) in the Andes!!
Just a half-day’s drive from the coast, you’ll find the thriving town of Baños nestled in a small valley deep in the Andes. Baños is located at the base of the active volcano Tungurahua and offers breathtaking 360-degree mountain views. The town offers many outdoor activities for the thrill seeker, such as zip-lining, bungee jumping, whitewater rafting, and canyoning (waterfall rappelling) just to name a few. And for those who don’t seek quite the adrenaline rush, take an afternoon kayaking journey, or rent a bike and ride down Ruta de Cascadas (Route of the Waterfalls) to visit the most spectacular waterfall, Cascada del Diablo. This iconic waterfall has steps which descend down to the bottom of the falls where you can get up-close and personal…and even a little wet! For those who want to take the journey one step further, there is a crawling path where you can go directly behind the falls! Amazing!
Don’t let the sound of an active volcano intimidate you from making Baños a must-do on your bucket list. Tungurahua’s crater faces the opposite direction of the town, so even though residents say that at times they can see ash plumes and feel slight tremors, residents and tourists are able to take in this spectacular site from a safe distance.
Keep an eye out for our next blog where we talk with a former Expat who, with his son, moved to Baños from Chicago five years ago to open a hostel and restaurant where they now brew their own beer!
